Monthly Writing Prompt
For this month's writing prompt write a scene using the following sentence to start;

The streets were deserted. Where was everyone? Where had they all gone?

Writing Tip
Our monthly writing tips are written by our very own TerishD. You can read more in Terish's Blog located in "The Abstractions" area of the forum.

Look Back

When not able to write ahead, it helps to look back. In my case I had written a paragraph ahead of the story. What I needed to do was add a section of exposition (talking) presenting some facts. In going back, I realized that I could insert a section where a 'tour' of the surroundings could be done. This allowed for character interaction, story development, and other things that enabled me to present the facts in an entertaining manner.

One should not face a writer's block with the mentality of bursting through it. I have found in my own experience that a writer's block is usually due to my mind indicating that it has a problem in 'channeling' the story. One reason might be a re-imagining of certain story points. Another reason however is that there is a problem in where you are at in the story, so you need to look back and find out the problem with the 'journey' that prevents the tale from advancing.

SCRIBBLES HOTSPOT

The Scribbles Hotspot is where all caution is thrown to the wind and every member of Scribbles will have a turn in the Hotspot, probably more than one.

Here is how it works; a random member will be selected, and that person will be subjected to questions from other members, 10 questions before proceeding to the next person. These 10 questions can be about anything. Writing, life, personal views.

You can answer if you want, but if you don't want to, please state why you don't want to, or tell us you don't like that question. Remember this is the hotspot and although you have the option to opt out of certain questions, we also want that you are honest.

This is a way to get to know our members on a deeper level, a way of becoming a family.

Well, firstly, it's not just my online name. It's the name I go by in real life as well. It's sort of a long story how that came about.

My mother, well-meaning as she was, named me after Jesus. It didn't take long for me to want no part of that. On top of this she'd chosen a name that no less then ten girls I went to school with had also been given. Teachers and other adults were always having to call me by my first and last name or even middle name, which had also been chosen for its religious meaning. It was so bad that whenever I had to go to the doctor's office as a child I had to give my mother's maiden name along with my own because there was another girl my age who used the same doctor who had the same name, first, last, and middle. This was annoying, confusing, and just all around a pain and has followed me into nearly every situation where I've been required or encouraged to use my 'real' name.

Meanwhile, I've always been prone to doing really odd or dramatic things to my hair and had an interest in dragons and mythology. So, the hydra of Greek mythology seemed to sum up my essence fairly well. I started writing poetry under the name Hydra in high school. Some of my friends started calling me by it and introducing me to other friends by it and as they say, the rest is history.

But since most people can't get by with one name I decided to tack on a surname.

Star came to me in the form of the song "Anti-Christ Superstar" by Marilyn Manson; "I am the hydra / now you'll see your star." Plus, the star, as an occult symbol, has a lot of meaning for me.

The M is a little bit of a mixed bag. Part of it is because it is the first letter of another name I use to work under. Part of it is to honor another, demonized, figure from Roman mythology; the morning star. (I'll let those who don't know look that one up for themselves). But mostly it's just me being weird. I like names with letters... I'm such a geek. Embarassed

Not being there for my ex-girlfriend (who's still a really good friend) when she had her baby, because I was angry with her for not being in a place where she could love me the same way I loved her. She had no other friends or family who could or would be there and she called me from the hospital while in labor to ask me to come, but I refused to go. It's been almost ten years and she's long since forgiven me, but I still feel bad about it.

When I was two years old. He was the boy next door. But that wasn't when the love started. We didn't start up with that until we were in middle school (6th grade) and dated until my 10th grade year, then got back together my 11th grade year.

It was dramatic and painful and wonderful. Everything young love should be.

A dragon, which is what I imagine you were thinking.

The why is fairly simple, power. Both physical and mystical.

I'm not quite finished with it yet, but I'm proud that I've continued forward with my Infernal Empire series.

There have been A LOT of people who have tried to stop me; both subtly and not so subtly. I've been told everything from I'm being too ambitious to I just flat out shouldn't be writing such books.

I've had to deal with 'friends' who don't understand all that goes into producing a finished novel scoff at me for 'taking so long'. It took me four years to get the first book ready for an editor; while raising a child, writing the rough drafts for the second and third book, and outlining the fourth and fifth. Yeah, those people have a firm grip on reality. Rolling Eyes

I even had one computer crash and had to retype about 400 pages.

But I haven't let any of it stop me. I've just kept going, but that's what it takes.

To be on the New York Times bestsellers list, but that's sort of boring. So, I'll say to have my own reality television show. Trust me my life is interesting enough to fill an hour a week and then some.

I completely understand what you are saying. The biggest complaint that I hear is, "But you aren't making money from it." They however turn a deaf ear when I speak of how poor the quality of those texts that THEY spend money to get. I might not be gaining money, but my stories provide me with pleasure and I am not LOSING money.

Keep to your dreams. Be your BIGGEST fan. Don't ever lose faith in yourself. I tell everyone that I write with the knowledge that my favorite writer is working on his next novel. You should also not be scared of speaking positively about yourself. You might not get wealthy achieving your goal, but there is a substantial reward. Simply being able to speak with the knowledge that you accomplished something is more than many people.
