For this month's writing prompt write a scene using the following sentence to start;

The streets were deserted. Where was everyone? Where had they all gone?

Look Back

When not able to write ahead, it helps to look back. In my case I had written a paragraph ahead of the story. What I needed to do was add a section of exposition (talking) presenting some facts. In going back, I realized that I could insert a section where a 'tour' of the surroundings could be done. This allowed for character interaction, story development, and other things that enabled me to present the facts in an entertaining manner.

One should not face a writer's block with the mentality of bursting through it. I have found in my own experience that a writer's block is usually due to my mind indicating that it has a problem in 'channeling' the story. One reason might be a re-imagining of certain story points. Another reason however is that there is a problem in where you are at in the story, so you need to look back and find out the problem with the 'journey' that prevents the tale from advancing.

I was reading through some blogs today and some way or another ended up on one that was an open call for submissions to an up and coming e-zine which read in part: "We will be excepting short stories in all genres..."

I thought to myself, "really? And I hope for your sake they are all already edited for grammar."

I you see they said they were EXCEPTING submissions.

Except: 1. vt
omit: to leave out or exclude somebody or something (formal) (usually passive) “Hazel eyes excepted, two years more might make her all that he wished.” Jane Austen Emma 1816
2. conj
unless (archaic)

What they meant instead was that they were ACCEPTING them.

Accept: 1. vt take something offered: to take something that is offered, for example, a gift or payment
2. vti say yes to invitation: to reply in the affirmative to an invitation
3. vti take on duty: to agree to take on a duty, responsibility, or position
4. vt believe something: to acknowledge that something is true
5. vt endure situation: to tolerate something without protesting or attempting to change it
6. vt come to terms with something: to acknowledge a fact or truth and come to terms with it
7. vt take blame for something: to admit the blame or responsibility for something
8. vt law commerce agree to terms: to indicate formal agreement to the terms and conditions in a contract
9. vt allow somebody to join: to allow somebody to join an organization or attend an institution
10. vt process something: to be able to process something or be operated by something
old machines that won’t accept the new cards
11. vt be welcoming to somebody: to treat somebody as a member of a group or social circle
12. vt receive something for review: to receive something such as a report for official action or review
13. vt agree to marry somebody: to reply in the affirmative to a marriage proposal (dated)

See the difference? It is a very important one.

Wow, I mean those two words are totally different for me, and I never would have thought that people might use them wrong. But it seems that everything is possible.

Very interesting!
