Monthly Writing Prompt
For this month's writing prompt write a scene using the following sentence to start;

The streets were deserted. Where was everyone? Where had they all gone?

Look Back

When not able to write ahead, it helps to look back. In my case I had written a paragraph ahead of the story. What I needed to do was add a section of exposition (talking) presenting some facts. In going back, I realized that I could insert a section where a 'tour' of the surroundings could be done. This allowed for character interaction, story development, and other things that enabled me to present the facts in an entertaining manner.

One should not face a writer's block with the mentality of bursting through it. I have found in my own experience that a writer's block is usually due to my mind indicating that it has a problem in 'channeling' the story. One reason might be a re-imagining of certain story points. Another reason however is that there is a problem in where you are at in the story, so you need to look back and find out the problem with the 'journey' that prevents the tale from advancing.

You've developed your writing skills, and utilize them in a way to encourage other writer's to write what they know, but you can't seem to sit down and write for yourself. What exactly keeps you from writing, work perhaps? Everyday life? Life of writer is lonely and hard at times so what's your excuse?

Sometimes I sit down and do not write because I am unsure about what to say. I thus consider the time more useful in considering: plot, characters, settings, etc. That does not mean that I cannot write, but only that I consider anything I do write to be inferior to what I could write. As soon as I get things figured out, I go back to writing.

Remember: The only cure for Writer's Block is to write.

This question has been haunting me for a while now, and I am glad you asked it. I want to say something as simple as Writers Block, but Writers Block is not a cause, it is an effect.

I am glad you asked this question, because now I am going to go look for the real answer I have been dodging for months.

I wouldn't say the life of a writer is lonely, they always spend time with their characters Very Happy

I have a child who I see most weekends and sometimes through the week, so when he's here I get very distracted and can't focus, so it takes like ten times longer to finish anything. Other than that, somedays I just don't feel ready to write. Sometimes I am so easily distracted I just open up word and look at it, then think i'll quickly check Facebook, then I'll quickly drop in on the forums, then suddenly, its night time.

Oops

The best writers out there take far longer to complete a novel than most. Take Clive Barker, it takes him about a year and a half to complete a novel, and not to mention the time in between forming an idea, building on it, and then going with it. I read the first 2 of his the Art books, and for years he's been promising the third instalment, and a majority of the time he says he's simply not ready to write it, and he's a master in my eyes. I idolise him, and whenever I pick up a book of his and start to read he inspires me a lot, and I feel the urge to write all over again. I think writer's would call it intelligent reading, do lots of it, and become hugely inspired, and also, you can learn a lot.
