Look Back
When not able to write ahead, it helps to look back. In my case I had written a paragraph ahead of the story. What I needed to do was add a section of exposition (talking) presenting some facts. In going back, I realized that I could insert a section where a 'tour' of the surroundings could be done. This allowed for character interaction, story development, and other things that enabled me to present the facts in an entertaining manner.
One should not face a writer's block with the mentality of bursting through it. I have found in my own experience that a writer's block is usually due to my mind indicating that it has a problem in 'channeling' the story. One reason might be a re-imagining of certain story points. Another reason however is that there is a problem in where you are at in the story, so you need to look back and find out the problem with the 'journey' that prevents the tale from advancing.

| I've been told by many readers I have a gift for dialogue, which is a big part of play writing, and when I was in my pre-teens I wrote a couple of very short plays. It's something I would eventually like to find my way back to, but haven't ever taken the time to properly learn.
Does anyone else here write plays and/or have an interest in play writing?

| Well when I read a book, I love the read the dialogs. Also when I still was in school and we read stories only containing dialog I loved it.
I've never written one, but I show a interest in play writing.

| Yeah, we read a lot of plays in school, and I've always enjoyed reading them. I'm reading a collecting from Bernard Shaw right now, actually.
It does seem to be a dying art form though. Everything today is screenplays, which is a totally different thing, because you don't have to work within the limits of what can be done on stage.

| I've written three screenplays and am working on a play with a friend, right now. I absolutely love the theatre. | |

| Hydra, I think you're right. Play writing isn't something that I was taught at my high school, but was introduced in college. Least to say, anyone wanting to take the class had to take a lot of their own personal time with the subject.
I don't think it's a dying art, just a narrow one. Writers that are pursuing it now are more dedicated to the craft because it's much harder to come by.
I believe you should continue reading and writing plays Hydra because you'll be among that talented handful.
