Monthly Writing Prompt
For this month's writing prompt write a scene using the following sentence to start;

The streets were deserted. Where was everyone? Where had they all gone?

Writing Tip

Look Back

When not able to write ahead, it helps to look back. In my case I had written a paragraph ahead of the story. What I needed to do was add a section of exposition (talking) presenting some facts. In going back, I realized that I could insert a section where a 'tour' of the surroundings could be done. This allowed for character interaction, story development, and other things that enabled me to present the facts in an entertaining manner.

One should not face a writer's block with the mentality of bursting through it. I have found in my own experience that a writer's block is usually due to my mind indicating that it has a problem in 'channeling' the story. One reason might be a re-imagining of certain story points. Another reason however is that there is a problem in where you are at in the story, so you need to look back and find out the problem with the 'journey' that prevents the tale from advancing.

I would have more respect for NaNoWritMo if it was followed by NaNoEditMo. As someone that does a lot of internet reading, the lack of editing is appalling - but there is plenty of stuff being posted. We don't need more stuff, but it would be nice to have more good stuff.

I have heard of this, but I don't think its right for me.
It seems to much for me.
It sounds cool, but its way to much for my skill level.

I might be wrong, but I think the whole point would be to just get it down on paper and then proceed with the editing as normal.

Honestly, thought I've seen the same problem with a lot of stuff online, but then I'm not paying to read a lot of it and it's not coming from a publishing house and the author isn't getting paid. So, can we really expect them to go into their pocket and pay a professional editor? At the same time though, it is important for a writer to learn to catch their own mistakes. For me it's been a trial and error sort of thing. Trial by fire in some cases. If just bothers me when I see a writer that doesn't seem to be growing and keeps repeating the same mistakes.

90% doesn't need a professional edit, it just needs a little tender loving care. I would be happy if the writers' simply paid attention to the editors on their word processors. I have to admit that I know professional editors that have collected good money simply taking a manuscript, then printing out the responses that they get FROM a word processor.

I would love to get into theme, character study, and other really intimate story conversations with another author. That doesn't happen because the conversation usually starts and stops with grammar comments.

That's because grammar is something we can all for the most part agree on. Character study and the such ventures off into the area of opinion and personal taste.

I did Nano before, and let me tell you it isn't hard if you are just writing which is what they want you to do. They want you to write for the entire month and post. But like most writers I'm very anal, my grammar and tense jumping tends to leave me not wanting to post.

If you just want to get start writing, Nano will be great for you but if you want to write something worth sharing then you'll have to do extreme edits afterwards. Its all about the writing.

What I did get from Nano is a lot of different story plot ideas which is a plus but the story I worked on as a whole was nothing but garbage. Good luck if you want to try, its fun if not anything else.

It also takes a willingness to read and get interested in the works of others. Too many that write want you to read and comment on THEIR works, but don't make the effort to do that to others. I get credit (and blame) for reading and responding to others, but seldom get harassed in return. Yes, most do not write enough to become intimate with their characters, but I have gained control of what forums I am on simply because I am the only one staying present and responding to others.

NaNoWroMo is not about writing a perfect story or some amazing master piece, it is about sitting down and writing.

Too often aspiring and even established writers let things distract them, dogs, games, friends, internet, etc, etc, etc. And do not buckle down and write.

This is about doing just that. No one needs to read your work, no one needs to care what you are writing. You do not need to read what anyone else wrote. It is about you, your story, and this chance to sit down and force yourself to write.

The exact thing that every well known and successful author will tell you "make time to write" and that is exactly what this is.

Mister Urs.
