Monthly Writing Prompt
For this month's writing prompt write a scene using the following sentence to start;

The streets were deserted. Where was everyone? Where had they all gone?

Writing Tip
Our monthly writing tips are written by our very own TerishD. You can read more in Terish's Blog located in "The Abstractions" area of the forum.

Look Back

When not able to write ahead, it helps to look back. In my case I had written a paragraph ahead of the story. What I needed to do was add a section of exposition (talking) presenting some facts. In going back, I realized that I could insert a section where a 'tour' of the surroundings could be done. This allowed for character interaction, story development, and other things that enabled me to present the facts in an entertaining manner.

One should not face a writer's block with the mentality of bursting through it. I have found in my own experience that a writer's block is usually due to my mind indicating that it has a problem in 'channeling' the story. One reason might be a re-imagining of certain story points. Another reason however is that there is a problem in where you are at in the story, so you need to look back and find out the problem with the 'journey' that prevents the tale from advancing.

http://www.associatedcontent.com/user/246967/michael_pasquale.html

Above is the link to me and the two articles I have published through them. I plan on having a lot more published there soon.

It seems from the payment brake down that you'd have to get a LOT of viewers to look at your page to make any real money, but you can't expect something for nothing. So, I guess that's fair.

Also, does the site focus exclusively on non-fiction? It seems from the category list that they do.

Well, it is a great way to start if you're new to writing. I made this week alone, an extra.. $45. They pay upfront for your articles, as well as page views. It takes a while, yes, to get high page views, but there are methods one can take to help increase those numbers.

You can submit fiction, but the way the site works, it wouldn't pay out for you. They supply articles to many thousands of media publications and therefore, there is a way that you can end up selling your article to one of their affiliates.

Its worth a shot though.

I might pass the information on to a couple of friends who write movie/book reviews, but I honestly don't think I'd get much use out it.

Still good to know, though.

To be honest with you; I had never written an "article" before in my life. I had always written fiction. But I was dumbfounded by how easy they really were - with a bit of research - that I just had my 3rd article accepted. It really is quick, easy cash - as well as some credits under your belt. Doesn't mean I plan on writing fiction no longer.

I briefly ran a non-fiction magazine with a friend. I've written/edited articles and interviews before. So, you don't have to sell me on how easy it is. I'm just not interested in anything other then fiction at the moment.

Hey,

Just found this out and thought that you'd be interested in it. They DO have a LARGE section for poetry, shorts and the like and many of them seem to be doing fairly well with both payment AND views. Just something for you to possibly chew on. I had a friend from another forum post a poem there and two weeks later it was picked up by one of AC's partners to be printed in a poetry anthology. Pretty cool I'd say. Worth trying.
