Monthly Writing Prompt
For this month's writing prompt write a scene using the following sentence to start;

The streets were deserted. Where was everyone? Where had they all gone?

Writing Tip
Our monthly writing tips are written by our very own TerishD. You can read more in Terish's Blog located in "The Abstractions" area of the forum.

Look Back

When not able to write ahead, it helps to look back. In my case I had written a paragraph ahead of the story. What I needed to do was add a section of exposition (talking) presenting some facts. In going back, I realized that I could insert a section where a 'tour' of the surroundings could be done. This allowed for character interaction, story development, and other things that enabled me to present the facts in an entertaining manner.

One should not face a writer's block with the mentality of bursting through it. I have found in my own experience that a writer's block is usually due to my mind indicating that it has a problem in 'channeling' the story. One reason might be a re-imagining of certain story points. Another reason however is that there is a problem in where you are at in the story, so you need to look back and find out the problem with the 'journey' that prevents the tale from advancing.

Hi. I’m a thermometer. My name is Sam. I don’t have any love in my life, so I’m looking for a date. I tried the classifieds, but they all want a human companion. Not much out there for a single thermometer.

I have found a few female thermometers who are looking, but they almost all want a “cool headed-guy,” and my Mercury is always around the one-hundred-degree mark. I’m hot stuff. I can’t help it. I’m ready to make love or fight at any moment; it’s just who I am.

So, I’ll continue to look. You guys know of anyone? I prefer tall and skinny with large numbers and increment marks. Profession and age are unimportant. Help me!

Very Happy

The lingering orange scent of the woman’s perfume intoxicated me; it made me wish I were younger, stronger. The vision of her leaving the gallery was one that has etched itself into my brain forever. I wonder what she did, what she liked. She wore no rings, and the look in her eye said ‘available’. Oh, how I wish I were younger.

The End

Out of the dark it came,
Whizzing, whirring, humming on the road.
Halogen lights should have
...Marked its presence. The car.
But she never saw it coming. She never heard
A thing.
Hungry, tired, and shaky, she kept her nose
To the ground. Her ears were bad before she
Got lost. Now they were worse.
A beep, a screech, a yelp. Those were the sounds
That marked the death of a loyal, lonely and aging hound.

Timeless hairstyle

The lady pleaded with the man and yet
It was no use.
She was doomed. It didn't matter anymore.
Beehive, wave, bonnet - she had a
Timeless hairstyle.
Forever cursed to be in magazines and in the middle
Of conversations. Cursed with fabulous follicles.

Blue Lemon

How could I know the car was bad? When I saw it there, shining in the mid-day sun, it looked like a dream. Dark blue, new tires, clean glass, white top. I bought it immediately, and immediately it began having problems. Bad radiator Tuesday, transmission not shifting by Sunday, the muffler fell off a week later. Why did this happen to a car I love so much? Why?
